Images

Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

This page also allows access to details of artefacts (physical objects) held by the museum. Please note that when changing between photographs and artefacts, the classification list is only updated after the first search.

1900 - 1914
Bretby Hall, probably pre WW1. Built in 1777 replacing earlier mansion built in 1610. Property of the Stanhope family (later made Earls of Chesterfield). Not lived in after 1885 and sold in 1915 to J.D.Wragg then sold in 1926 to Derbyshire C.C. as used as an orthopaedic hospital until around the 1980's when converted into luxury apartments.

Moira furnace and Ashby canal bed (filled in in the 1960's) Furnace built in 1804 by the Earl of Moira. Forerunner of the larger, more advanced furnaces and includes lime kilns, a casting shed, engine house. Is now a museum. For some time in the 20th. century, people were housed in the building!.

Round House. Building on right was the Hastings Arms public house, which became a cafe and is now a private residence. Note telephone pole. Judging by dress of elderly gentleman in front of Round House and policeman, photo possibly 1920's.

South side, bottom looking east from the "island building in the 1950's. Businesses identified : at end of "island on right is No.34A Melias (grocer). On the left is Boots (chemists).

The "For Sale" photo in 1961 by Stevenson & Barratt of No.59 and 61 Wheelers (drapers and furnishers) demolished in 1962 to make way for Fine Fare supermarket. No. 57 Owen Jones (chemist) to the left and No. 62 Modern Decorating to the right.

Very similar photo as previous - probably taken at the same time. Businesses identified - extreme right No. 63 Bulls Head (public house) No.65 Charles Hussey (newsagent). Extreme left - Town Hall. Note: small number of motorised vehicles can be seen.

Statutes fair in around 1995-1999 viewed in approx same position as previous photo . Businesses identified - No.51 Ashby Antiques, No.53 H.and E.Bullen (grocer, wines and spirits) - became Rebellion (ladies clothes), No.55 and 57 Owen Jones (chemists),.

Ashby bound tram No. 4 at the junction of the current A511 (Burton/Ashby road) and Anwell Lane (leading to Smisby) . The Tap House public house stands on this corner. Blackfordby church in distance. Oil painting by William James Farmer, 1912. He lived at Newbold Worthington, and was a chauffeur at New Lount colliery.
