Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

This page also allows access to details of artefacts (physical objects) held by the museum. Please note that when changing between photographs and artefacts, the classification list is only updated after the first search.

Same scene as previous P09-0283 but in 1985-87. Businesses identified - extreme left, No.74 The Town Hall, No.72 Walter Garratt (hairdresser). Walter retired approx 1980. Used to cycle round town and to the hospital, cutting hair and shaving, well after he left the shop. No.70 Harrisons (butchers). No. 70 and 72 became a travel agents. No.68 Town & Country Building Society.

Kilwardby Street. Wesleyan Methodist chapel built in 1869 and being used as a Auction house/Sale room 10 February 1985, prior to being demolished (area is now exit from Co-op car park) Wesleyans first worshipped in a licenced building on the south side of the street. In 1831, built a chapel opposite, then rebuilt in 1869. Closed 1958, became an auction room. Demolished in 1985 and area incorporated into supermarket (currently Somerfield) car park and road exit. Note extreme left, Midland railway line Ashby to Breedon branch. Level crossing, signals etc.

West side. Front view of derelict Hare and Hounds (public house) - closed in approx 1950's. Last known innkeeper was Harry Herbert Hunter 1943 to closure. Premises finally sold in 2000, Pump Room (restaurant) opened 05.07.2002, then changed to "The Crowded House" restaurant in 2007. X reg car in front - would be new in 1983, so photo likely o be late 1980's.

Court 12, South Street looking towards Market Street taken from a bedroom window in the "Vaults" in 2009. Babes 2 Tots business in foreground, (originally the court to the rear of the Old George). As late as 1911, an Inspector's report said "more than 50% of the houses I visited are altogether unfit for human habitation!!) Those buildings (on left) were developed into various units for various trades in the 1990's.
