Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

1925 - 1932
Elford Street. The Giliwiskaw brook runs underground at this
point. May be origin of name "Elford" - was there a ford
crossing the brook when is ran above ground (see 1850-51 map)
when the area had a bridge known as Lamty's bridge? Elford
Street railings act as a sluice for the flooding Giliwiskaw. This features the flood of either 1925 or 1932. Farmers corner shop on the corner of Derby Road.

1939 pre
Hill Street looking towards Kilwardby Street. The main road for
Burton used to go up Kilwardby Street and along Hill Street
(Rosemary Lane in 1768) where there were four blocks of 17th
century cottages on right. Only two survive. No.3 dates to
1630-1640. Nearest block of cottages were demolished between
1919 and 1939.

Tamworth Road looking outbound. archway is on left just after pony and trap in previous photo. Horse and cart with pig on board, owed by Cutter. Flags indicate some sort of celebration (1902 Edward VII coronation, or 1911 George V coronation?). Cutter family are recorded as being in the Oddfellows Arms, 32 Kilwardby Street 1881-1904. Beer retailers, Derby Road. Corn merchants at 21 Market Street, and cabinet makers, 70 Market Street in 1912.
