Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

Lower Church Street. The Lyric picture palace premises for sale
in 1977. Opened in 1912 in the premises of the Wagon and
Horses (public house, which dates back to 1758) and finally
closed in 1927. Used by Calder Colours as storage, vacated in
1972 and put up for sale in 1977. Purchased by the Freemasons
and renovated into their Lodge.

Lower Church Street. Entry beside the Lyric Rooms, looking out
on to Lower Church Street. This entry led to the part of the
premises used by the Blue Coat school, founded 1719 and Green
Coat school, founded 176o. The charities united in early 1800's.
Wingfield Willis Postlethwaite was headmaster for 31 years, and
died February 21st 1872. He is buried in the town cemetery in
the consecrated area, Row 27, No. 016 (grid 1367)

so this area was one-way (became so in the 1970's) and new
frontage on Lyric Rooms, so post 1977. Photo probably early

Extreme left - offices for John German (solicitors), No.8, the
Clockmakers house, No.6 and No.4. Note old style "halt" sign,
so road still two way at this stage (now one way at this point).
