Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

Elford Street. The Giliwiskaw brook runs underground at this point. May be origin of name "Elford" - was there a ford crossing the brook when is ran above ground (see 1850-51 map) when the area had a bridge known as Lamty's bridge? Elford Street railings act as a sluice for the flooding Giliwiskaw.

Elford Street. These dwellings replaced those known as The Garden of Eden, featured in the previous two photos. Known in 1925 as Kenilworth Terrace. The Giliwiskaw brook runs underground at this point. View of The Green looking from Elford street. Terraced cottages on left foreground built approx 1820's and demolished late 1970's and replaced with Claridge Place/North Street development of flats. End cottage in 1908 occupied by John Joseph Staley - shopkeeper. 1936 John J. Staley and Mrs. Elizabeth Staley - hardware, tea and grocery. Shop still open at this time. Note: old "Keep Left" signs on roundabout. Note: In far distance on left - bell tower on top of fire station in Brook Street can be seen.
