Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

1950 - 1959
On left - outbound from Ashby. Extreme right of photo is side
of Flaxdressers (public house) with Double Diamond advertisement
- now Saffron Blue (Indian fusion restaurant). Three storey
house with steps was known as the farmhouse, with No.29 next
door to the right was a general store. Mr. Cox of Old Parks
Farm used to sell eggs there. In 1881 and 1900, directory shows
it to be premises of Benjamin Cheatle (butcher). Cheatle family
were farmers, cattle dealers, butchers at No. 37 Market Street
also. Farmhouse still lived in in 1964 and demolished soon after Site became
Machins Yard.

1980 - 1987
End of terrace of four cottages on left - outbound from Ashby
(see also P09-0662 and 0663). In process of renovation in the
1980's. This cottage was the one room Dog and Duck (public
house) which closed in 1840.

No.19 Wood Street - R. Grundy (bakers and confectioners). Local
directory shows John Grundy there is 1862, 1864, 1870, 1877.
Sydney Grundy 1896, Richard Grundy 1908-1912, William Grundy
1916. 1916 also shown as business in No. 65 Market Street, and
later No.68. Were there into the late 1950's or early 1960's.

Looking up Wood Street, outbound from Ashby at junction of North
Street. Right turn to Upper Church Street in middle distance.
White building on corner still has shop windows - was run as
general store by a Mr. Jinks in 1950's. Photo dated as the
1960's based on motor car and the X type TV aerials.

cottages on right renovated in the 1980's. The first of these
cottages used to be the one room Dog and Duck (public house),
closed in 1840. Machins yard entrance on extreme right - now
developed in a number of small industrial units.

Looking down Wood Street towards top of Market Street. Half way
down on right was No.19 J.Grundy (bakers) with bakehouse up the
yard. A horsedealer, carrier and bootmaker were some of the
residents of the rest of this row in the late 19th century. At
the bottom, in distance see advert for Mantle's flour on
building occupied by Evans (grocers).
