Images

Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

This page also allows access to details of artefacts (physical objects) held by the museum. Please note that when changing between photographs and artefacts, the classification list is only updated after the first search.

Businesses identified - No.50 George Inn, No.52 The Kings Head, No.54 Parrs or Pares Bank, Arthur Potter, manager, No.56 Lamb Inn, No.58 John Sandlant (butcher), No.60 Davenport and Sons - The Hole in the Wall (public house), No.62 Leicester bank. Note: marks on road where water cart has been to dampen down the dust.

Business identified- extreme left just see No.67 Bulls Head, No.70 The Castle Inn, No.72 the Misses E. and M.Wright (boot and shoe makers), No.74 The Town Hall, No.76 Searle and Kelsey (clothier, hatter and hosiers), No.80 George Maynard (florist and seedsman)-this was just a house, but had a florist, seedsman and nursery on Nottingham Road, No.78 J.W.Beadsmoire (printer stationer).

Business identified- No.49 T.Litherland and Company (Sydney Staynes)(china, glass etc.), No.51 Waverley Rooms (refreshments), extreme right can just see No.56 Lamb Inn, No.58 John Sandlant (butcher), No.60 Davenport and Sons - The Hole in the Wall (public house), No.62 Leicester Bank.

Looking up due east. Business identified- No.37 Charles John Belton (painter and decorator), No.39 Freeman Hardy Willis (boot and shoe), No.41 Old George Inn. Note: shoes hanging outside Freeman, Hardy and Willis. Market stalls on the right continued in the street to late 1950's.
