Images

Ashby museum has an archive of over 3000 photographs – both original and copies. This page allows people to view the main group of photographs, but does not include photographs in specialist collections as these often include ones that are not in our primary area of interest. Larger images may be viewed at the museum during opening hours, and copies for private use may be purchased.

This page also allows access to details of artefacts (physical objects) held by the museum. Please note that when changing between photographs and artefacts, the classification list is only updated after the first search.

From bottom looking west. 1925 floods. Businesses identified- No.40A Goodheads tea rooms, No.38A Laurie and Co. (confectioner), No.36A W.H.Ward (tobacconist). Extreme right No.41 Old George Inn, No.23 Hilton (bootmaker) can just see the sign. This must have been at the height of the floods, note - water stretches to bottom of street.

Bottom, looking west. (note this copy is mirror image). Pre- tramway and pre removal of spire on Holy Trinity church (was removed in 1900). Businesses identified - at bottom of street, on right No.12 W.A.Haynes and Sons (grocers), on left Co-op (grocers). Extreme left No.28 W H Carman (printer and bookseller), No.26 was Poynton's (butchers) 1870's to 1900's, No.22 and No.24 Pickthorne (drapers), No.20 F.S.Gardner (butcher). He took over in 1900, so this dates photo to exactly 1900, No.18 Rushtons (game and fishmongers).

Partly demolished buildings to make way for tramway. Businesses identified - on right No.11 Wykes (fancy goods), No.13 Holdrons (ironmonger), No.17 Slaters (grocer) "modern" grocer, tea and butter. Water tower in distance at top of Kilwardby Street.

South side, looking down street, west. In distance Lloyds bank. Businesses identified - No.18 Rushtons (game), No.24 Leicester (building society), No.26 Baxters (butchers) were there in 1978, No.28 Preedy's (newsagent and booksellers), No.34A and No.40A Richards of Ashby (radio, T.V. video etc). Just visible on the right No.13 Holdrons (ironmonger). Note: only one parked vehicle, very unusual - was this photo taken on a Sunday same time as P09-0219?
